The witness that never changed

You will learn how to locate the constant awareness across a life of continuous change.

The Illusion of Change

Civilisation evolved and witnessed transformation over a period of time. As time changed, materials changed, human beings changed, the forms of nature changed. Change came externally and internally, and nothing was exempt from it.

With all of that happening, one thing remained constant across every phase: the Self experience. Something was present at each stage to register the change as change.

The Position of the Observer

Consider what this requires. To know that something has changed, you must be positioned outside the change — otherwise you would change with it and notice nothing. Yet the witness is not standing apart from the world like an observer behind glass. It is inseparable from the system. It is the essence in which the transformation is occurring.

Practice Prompt

Recall yourself at seven years old. The body has been replaced almost entirely. The beliefs are unrecognisable. The circumstances are gone. Now ask carefully: is the one who is doing the recalling a different one, or the same one? Sit with this question for 10 minutes without rushing to answer.
